SpacerFabric_HOME has a utility model protection - partners are welcome !
Other than a tent, the foamed spacer fabric structure offers insulation, a fast and simple way to put it up, longer durability plus a way to recycle or to reuse it. The structure can be made from biodegradable PLA fibres, filled with biodegradable foam, or from recyclable PET fibres filled with PET foam. Also basalt fibres in combination with foam concrete would be an option. The latter could be reused for further building activities as lightweight partition walls, the former could also be reused as insulation panels.
The work is part of the studio FabricFoam© Prof. Claudia Lüling. SpacerFabric_HOME demonstrates alternatives to classic membrane–based textile buliding structures. A reinforced, insulated and folded spacer fabric acts as the main structure for a temporary house, the SpacerFabric_HOME. The aim is to develop new lightweight textile constructions in order to improve conditions for people that need to live temporarily away from home.
For the project a six centimeter thick, warp-knitted spacer fabric has been choosen. The cavities between the double layer fabric are filled with foam in order to achieve a structure similar to the fibrous and spongy structure of reeds like typha. Learning from nature, the foamed spacer fabric uses the synergy between the porous foam material together with the fibres of the fabric to not only improve the mechanical, but also to improve the building physical properties of the new textile constructions. The result is on the one hand a sandwich-like, lightweight, self-supporting, tension and pressure resistant and insulated structure. On the other hand the foamed spacer fabric offers additional functional features, that help to put up and stabilise the house. If you slice up one side of the foamed spacer fabric, you can then bend and fold the sandwich-like structure. This hingeless mechanism is used in combination with velcro fastening.
The foamed and precut spacer fabric comes in 70 kg packages. They get folded and fastened with velcro within the area of the cornes, thus becoming bending-resistant. Three of these modules together form a space in the size of the common UNHCR tents. (6m * 4m* 2,2/3,3m). In a last step a light textile envelope - again fastend by velcro - protects the structure from rain and tightens the whole structure.
